Verbal Arts Centre‘s Reading Rooms Book Buddies uses shared reading and reading aloud to encourage groups of primary school children to express themselves and to share their experiences with a fully trained volunteer facilitator.
Working with Barnardo’s Collective Impact programme, the project aims to foster a joy of reading through a series of safe, nurturing and accessible creative sessions that use a short story and poem every week. Book Buddies will build community cohesion and strong links between children, parents schools, and the wider community through a love of reading and exploring the ways that reading opens up new worlds.
Reading Rooms is looking for volunteers to help them deliver this exciting shared reading project. There is a short and informal application process and successful candidates will be offered free OCN accredited training in Facilitation Skills for Shared Reading Level 2.
This course is delivered by the Reading Rooms Programme from the Verbal Arts Centre and takes place over three full days. All three days are compulsory. Reading Rooms also offers free Access NI checks, ongoing mentoring and support and additional master classes to add depth to the shared reading experience.
Once trained, volunteers will deliver every week to a group in one of the selected primary schools. The time commitment is approximately 2 hours per week during normal school hours – an hour to prepare and an hour to deliver the Reading Room. They will make every effort to match volunteers with a primary school close to their home or work place. The training will take place in early Autumn.
If you are from the Belfast area and would like more information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org and a member of the Reading Rooms team will get back to you.
