Volunteer to deliver Reading Rooms in Care Homes

Verbal’s Reading Rooms in Care Homes initiative is helping to create a society where care homes are a great place to live, work and visit, for residents, staff, family, friends and the local community. We need YOU to get involved. Currently we are looking for readers for our care homes project in both Derry/Londonderry and Omagh.

What do Reading Rooms offer?
Reading together, talking and sharing stories and developing ideas collectively creates powerful and beneficial connections. A Reading Room benefits everyone involved, bringing people together, and provides a platform for the sharing of stories, memories, thoughts and opinions. It gives residents a chance to make their voice heard, creates a sense of relaxation and calm, while also improving concentration and memory. Become a reader, join in the conversations and help residents to be a part of the community. We are looking for people who love reading and can read aloud and help a group start a conversation. You do not have to be an expert in English Literature to help facilitate – all the necessary guidance and assistance will be provided.

How can I get involved?

Contact Sinead Devine on 028 71 266 946 or email info@theverbal.co. This is followed by training in OCN Level 2 Facilitation Skills for Shared Reading run over three-and-a half days, usually spread across 2 or 3 weeks. Proposed dates for the autumn for this programme are 19th and 26th October and 2nd November from 10am – 4pm daily. The OCN Level 2-accredited course in is followed up with a half-day Safeguarding Adults course, reflecting Reading Rooms’ respect for the vulnerabilities of the groups with whom they work.
