Reading Rooms Round-up: Dec ’17

We round up what’s been happening in Verbal’s various Reading Rooms groups across the country in the past month.

A lovely day was had with the young men at St Joseph’s College, reading The White Bear King, derived from the classic Norwegian fairy tale. The boy’s response was “that was the best story ever” – result!

Some of our participants in Seven Oaks who have engaged this year on the Henry Smith care homes project enjoyed a story about a father and son trying to get home for Christmas in the snow. This sparked off memories of the snow of ’63 where one resident recalled how neighbours helped one another to clear a path from the Lecky Road to the Star Factory so the workers could go to work safely.

There are some very unique, special, individuals in the world, and Kiera Duddy and her team at The Pickled Duck are amongst these amazing people! Their generosity and consideration to our visiting Reading Rooms group from Extern was hugely received and appreciated by everyone. Enya Clarke: “Amazing kind heart people who went above and beyond for our amazing young people in our group! We could not thank you enough for making our young people feel so welcomed and making there Christmas night so special. a big thank you to Kiera and all the staff at the Pickled Duck.” Kiera: “It’s our pleasure. What gorgeous kids. Thank you all for getting Xmas started.”

Little Legends had a special visitor at the weekend before Christmas: a very talented Santa with some great juggling elves too! The group read Santa’s 12 Days of Christmas (by Alex Robinson and Clare Fennell), and considered what Santa does when Christmas is over and all the presents are delivered. Little Legends will be back at Eason after the Christmas break on January 6th.

With International Volunteer Day being celebrated in December, here at Verbal Arts Centre we’ve just had our annual Reading Rooms Christmas party, celebrating the amazing work of our volunteers. There was plenty of time for some great conversation about our favourite moments of 2017 and some lovely lunch including a range of delicious home baked treats. Here’s to a joyful festive season and another amazing Reading Rooms year in 2018!
