North West Words have launched a new ‘North West Reading Series’, supported by Earagail Arts Festival, Donegal Country Council, and Arts Council Ireland.
The reading series promotes the best of spoken word, art and music in the North West at monthly events, happening in Florence Food Co. in Letterkenny. Each monthly event will feature writers who are from, or living in, the North West, or have a strong connection to the region. The first event saw readings from Brian Leyden, a long-term resident of Co. Sligo, and Averil Meehan, similarly, a long-term resident of Co. Donegal. Deirdre Hines, who will be reading in the series in November, reviewed the first night on NWW’s Facebook page.
Each of their event will two featured readers, music and open mic, with events running once a month until December 2017. NWW has been running since 2010, promoting local writers and musical talent, as well as providing a public platform for people to contribute and interact with. NWW also publishes a biannual online journal of poetry and fiction, currently edited by Nick Griffiths and Deirdre McClay. The most recent issue features the winning and shortlisted English and Irish language poems from the North West Words and Aurivo/Donegal Creameries Poetry Competition 2016.
