NI Screen: Olive Broderick and Ross Thompson

Lagan 12NOW poets Ross Thompson and Olive Broderick were recently commissioned to respond to the moving image content of Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive in the creation of new work.

Each was asked to create work exploring our profound relationship with the coast and sea: its impact on Northern Irish society and culture, and how the coastal experience continues to shape how we live, work and dream.

Olive’s piece focuses on Downpatrick and the North Coast, while Ross concentrates on the North Coast also, as well as Bangor and Portrush. Both of their poetical contributions have been set alongside excerpts of edited archive films by TACA, courtesy of National Museums Northern Ireland, and new soundtracks composed by Dáithí McGibbon.

The site also features interviews with Olive and Ross, discussing the process of researching and writing the poems and the experience, as a poet, of working with archive film.
